ctor Chadwick Boseman, best known for playing Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, died Friday of colon cancer at the age of 43. His family announced the news on Twitter:

In addition to appearing in four MCU films, including his starring role in Black Panther, Boseman also played real-life Black heroes Jackie Robinson, James Brown, and Thurgood Marshall. Boseman’s illness was not publicly known until his death, and his friends, collaborators, and fans are mourning him on social media, sharing stories about him, and celebrating his work. Here’s what people are saying.

Mr. Boseman leveled the playing field while fighting for his life... That’s heroism. I’ll remember the good times, the laughter, and the way he changed the game... #chadwickforever @chadwickboseman pic.twitter.com/IFfCSmLrhR

There's so much to be said about him. He was a brilliant writer and orator - I watched him carefully craft a brilliant speech for the NAACP. His dedication to his art was absolute. His love for his culture endless. His thirst for knowledge unquenchable. We lost a great man. pic.twitter.com/OyCTUydgZk

Shooting DRAFT DAY in Cleveland, @chadwickboseman and I went to the ballpark to see the Indians play the Tigers. We had met on the set of the movie just days prior and had many things in common, including sharing an agent. I had scored sweet tickets behind the visitor’s dugout

... but Chad was late getting to the park. He showed up with his cap pulled low and dark glasses. He was very apologetic for his tardiness. At first I thought the Incognito act and lateness might’ve been some Star Trip. It was anything but...

It was a year or so removed from Chad’s breakthrough role as Jackie Robinson in 42. He explained what had happened, “there was a group of people outside my hotel. They had Jackie jersey, bats, all kinds of 42 stuff for me to sign...

I had to slip out through the rear,” he got a bit choked up, “...look, I KNOW what Jackie means to people. I completely understand what he symbolizes and what he fought against. But I am NOT Jackie. I’m just an actor. I am not him.”

I was floored by the humility of the man. Most actors I know (sadly myself included) would likely be puffed-up and full of their own awesomeness — not Chad. His Soul would never let his Ego win the Battle.

That is what kind of man Chadwick Boseman was.

As Fate would have it, Chad died on Jackie Robinson Day, 2020. I’ll bet Jackie was waiting at the plate to welcome him Home.

FLY HIGH #42 and the Faux 42 — both were Great Men we were lucky to have on this earth.

What a gentle gifted SOUL. Showing us all that Greatness in between surgeries and chemo. The courage, the strength, the Power it takes to do that. This is what Dignity looks like. https://t.co/U3OOnJVS42

Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall, The Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman. Our real life super heroes.

I am crushed. Beyond crushed to wake up in the middle of the night to this nightmare, to the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Of colon cancer! What tried to kill me! It’s too much. It’s too much. Chadwick gave us so much. So much. And now he’s gone. 1/ pic.twitter.com/1qfiCghGdy

However, his art, his work remains. Colon cancer: you can never take his art, his work. It is eternal. And colon cancer: you can’t kill our love of Chadwick. It is eternal. Rest in our love my brother. pic.twitter.com/q2SYfUCmFW

Only Chadwick could embody Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, and T’Challa. He, too, knew what it meant to persevere. To summon real strength. And he belongs right there with them as a hero—for Black kids and for all our kids. There’s no better gift to give our world. ❤ pic.twitter.com/t2tjZDMxNT

The true power of @ChadwickBoseman was bigger than anything we saw on screen. From the Black Panther to Jackie Robinson, he inspired generations and showed them they can be anything they want — even super heroes. Jill and I are praying for his loved ones at this difficult time.
